Ravindu Gunawardena remanded till Aug.31


SSP’s wife allegedly evading arrest

Ravindu Gunawardena, the son of SSP Vas Gunawardena, who was wanted by the police for allegedly abducting and assaulting fellow IT student Nipuna Ramanayake, was remanded till August 31 and transferred to the Welikada Remand Prison last evening.

 

Meanwhile, a special police team deployed to investigate the incident was to arrest the mother of Ravindu Gunawardena yesterday. But no arrest had been made up to last evening, Police Spokesman SSP Ranjith Gunasekara told Daily Mirror.

 

Gangodawila Magistrate Wasantha Jinadasa, who visited Ravindu Gunawardena at the Colombo South (Teaching) Hospital in Kalubowila on Monday night, ordered that the suspect be remanded till August 31, in order to be brought to court on the next trial date.

The Gangodawila Magistrate, who inquired about the ailments of Ravindu Gunawardena, was told that he was suffering from pains in the eyes, head and lungs.

 

Kaduwela Magistrate Mahanil Prasantha de Silva, who ordered the 11 policemen to be remanded till August 31, instructed the investigating police team to report on the incident pertaining to Ravindu Gunawardena, to the Gangodawila Magistrate since the suspect is hospitalised in the Gangodawila Magisterial Area. As a result, the custody of Ravindu Gunawardena, which was earlier held by the police, had been transferred to prison guards.

 

Colombo South (Teaching) Hospital director, Dr. Anil Jasinghe, said that the patient Ravindu Gunawardena had been discharged from the hospital in order to be transferred to the Welikada Remand Prison last evening.

 

He was taken to the prison in the Black Maria shortly after, eyewitnesses said.

Meanwhile a special police team deployed to arrest the mother of Ravindu Gunawardena reported that she had gone missing since yesterday afternoon.

SSP Ranjith Gunasekara said that the police team had visited her house and found that the suspect had left home, and that her whereabouts were unknown.

A special police team headed by SP Neil Hettiaarachchi is conducting investigations under the instructions of Anura Senanayake, the DIG in charge of Crime, on the directions of IGP Jayantha Wickramaratne.

No evidence’ against SSP Vas Gunawardena

No evidence was found against a senior police officer accused of abducting and brutally assaulting a student, police said.

Police spokesman Senior Superintendant of Police (SSP) Ranjith Gunasekara told BBC Sandeshaya that only accusations levelled against SSP Vas Gunawardena was questioning a student who had been abducted and assaulted hours ago.
