The police department has put into operation a special traffic and security plan for the International Indian Film Academy awards festival which begins today, Deputy Inspector General N.K. Illangakoon said yesterday.
 
However he told a news conference at the police headquarters that the major
traffic restriction would be on Saturday when the main awards ceremony takes place.
 
He said thousands of policemen assisted by the three armed forces and the Special Task Force (STF) would proved security for the foreign and local invitees, film stars and celebrities who will be visiting the Sugathadasa Stadium, the BMICH and the Sinhala Sports Club (SSC) grounds.
 
Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has organized a special shuttle service to the SSC grounds.
 
The fashion show at the BMICH will be opened only to special invitees with their vehicles being directed to the BMICH car park.
 
The charity cricket match will be held tomorrow at the SSC grounds and those attending are requested to park their vehicles at the CR and FC Grounds, SLFI Vehicle Park and at Sarana Road.
 
Those attending the IIFA awards ceremony on Saturday have to park their vehicles at St. Benedict’s College Grounds, the CWE car park, the Maligawatta Road and Pradeepa Road.
 
Traffic DIG Lucky Peiris asked people using the Negombo‐Colombo main road on Saturday to use the road along Wattala, Hekiththa, Modera to the Reclamation road and those using the Colombo‐Kandy road have been asked to use the road along Balummahara, Kaduwela to Battaramulla.
 
The 11th edition of the IIFA awards ceremony will be held in Colombo, from June 3 to 5.
 
The IIFA Weekend includes the high‐profile FICCI IIFA Global Business Forum, the IIFA Foundation Fashion Extravaganza, the IIFA Foundation Celebrity Cricket Match, World premieres of Indian films, IIFA Film Workshop and climaxed with the spectacular IIFA Awards.
 
The IIFA awards ceremony is the biggest South Asian media event and is considered among the most‐watched annual global events.
 
The streets in Colombo are being lit up to project a new image for the IIFA awards ceremony.
