Fishermen in Rameswaram did not put out to sea for the fourth consecutive day, on Friday, demanding the immediate release of five fishermen who were arrested by the Sri Lankan navy, according to a PTI report carried by the online edition of The Hindu on Dec. 5.

The mechanised boat fishermen began an indefinite strike since then demanding their immediate release and dropping of the cases registered against them by the Sri Lankan government.
Meanwhile, Dr. M. H. Jawahirullah, Ramanathapuram MLA and president of Manithaneya Makkal Katchi (MMK), urged the Central and State governments to take immediate steps for the safe release of fishermen.
The SLN headquarters told The Island that Fast Attack Craft had intercepted the Indian trawler near Iranativu island. The SLN recovered two kilos of high quality heroin.
