Sri Lanka's Elections Department has taken steps to issue temporary Identity Cards to the persons who do not possess an ID card in the North Central, Sabaragamuwa and Eastern Provinces slated to hold election.

Additional Election Commissioner R.M.A.L. Ratnayake has said that temporary ID cards would be issued until August 20th.
Applications for temporary ID cards are currently available at the grama niladhari offices.
According to the Election Department, temporary ID cards issued in 2008 and in 2009 will not be valid for this year's election. Meanwhile, applications for postal votes are also being accepted.
