The All Ceylon Muslim (ACMC) Congress yesterday demanded to know how Tamil National Alliance leader R. Sampanthan could state that if the SLMC teamed up with the government to contest the forthcoming Eastern Provincial Council polls, it would be a betrayal of the Tamil community.
ACMC general secretary Y. L. S. Hameed said that Sampanthan had stated that the late SLMC Leader M. H. M. Ashraff would have never agreed to any such alliance against the Tamil minority. "Although the SLMC and the TNA have had numerous bilateral discussions they have never come to any understanding on a solution or a separate Council for the Muslim Community," Hameed said. "Sampanthan cannot expect the Muslims to fall in line with the TNA as there is no understanding on any of the issues. The question arises whether the SLMC has had a private understanding with the TNA regardless of its consequences to the Muslim community."
