Army Commander Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya yesterday dismissed an allegation that the army’s strength in the North was equal to the civilians population. He said that the civilian population there was 500,000 whereas the army, had only 10,000 personnel serving there.

The Commander also dismissed a number of allegations leveled by pro-LTTE groups, when he addressed the media yesterday to announce the sponsorship deals and the schedule of Sri Lanka Army organized second Defence Seminar on 5Rs to be held from August 8 to 10.

The commander said that the relationship between the army and the civilians was ‘Perfect’. He said, "no civilian wants the army to leave as they really depend on the army. They have much confidence in the army and rush to the army when faced with problems."
