An election monitor in Sri Lanka says the police have failed to adhere to a directive issued by the Elections Department.
The Campaign for Free and Fair Election (CAFFE) stated that the Elections Department had directed the Eravur Police in the East to hand over the keys of the Eravur Post Office that was being occupied by a governing party candidate contesting the forthcoming Eastern provincial Council election.
CAFFE Executive Director, Keerthi Tennakoon in writing has told the Elections Commissioner that the police have not adhered to the directive by Assistant Elections Commissioner for the Batticaloa District who had asked the keys to be handed over to the Postal Department on July 28th.
Tennakoon has stated that the police have refused to hand over the keys saying it would hand them over to the Postal Department after the provincial council elections are concluded.
The CAFFE Executive Director has pointed out that this was a failure on the part of the police to adhere to a directive issued by the Elections Department.
