India denies visa to Sri Lanka's leftist leader to participate in Eelam conference

Political sources say that the High Commission of India has denied visa to Dr. Wickramabahu Karunaratne, the leader of Left Front to enter India.

Wickramabahu, an ardent supporter of Tamil's self-determination has planned to participate in the Tamil Eelam Supporters Organization (TESO) conference. He said earlier that he would participate in the conference.

In a SMS update sent to his supporters, Karunaratne has said that former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Karunanidhi will take up the matter with the central government of India.

Another Sinhala leftist leader Sirithunga Jayasuriya has also stated that he would take part in the confab.

Karunanidhi, the organizer of the conference meanwhile, has accused the Sri Lankan government of 'unleashing a wrong campaign' against pro-Eelam TESO meet.

The former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister has said that the conference is aimed at bettering the livelihood of Tamils in Sri Lanka.

He has urged the Tamils in India as well as in Sri Lanka not to believe the negative campaign undertaken on behalf of the Sri Lankan government.

TESO conference will be held in Chennai on August 12.
