The National Housing Development Authority has spent 280 million rupees for the modernization project of the housing complex with carpeted roads and other facilities.
The Sri Lankan government has taken measures to renovate old housing schemes in the capital city at a cost of 1 billion rupees (approximately US$ 7.5 million).
The government said under the program, the Construction, Engineering Services, Housing and Common Amenities Ministry has renovated the Maligawatte flats after 39 years and handed over to the public on August 5 under the patronage of Construction Engineering Services, Housing and Common Amenities Minister Wimal Weerawansa.
Minister Wimal Weerawansa has said that the Maligawatte housing complex, which houses around 10,000 people in 1,520 housing units, was established in 1973 and later development took place under the former President R. Premadasa.
The Minister has said that under the Mahinda Chintanaya Janasewana Nagamu Purawara Programme a number of long neglected housing complexes in Colombo have been renovated
